Nature, History and Birds ~ Field Trips near Morristown, New Jersey
Morristown is a 35-minute drive from the George Washington Bridge, and a great field trip destination, especially for US History, Nature and Birds.
One of my kids’ favorite destinations was the Raptor Trust in Basking Ridge (see below). Afterwards, we’d go bird watching in the Wildlife Refuge stop or visit the Great Swamp nature center.
There’s a lot of Revolutionary War history in Morristown. Signs in the area that say “Washington Slept Here” may be true! Learn about the discovery of the telegraph, visit a working historical farm, and more. Bring a picnic or eat in an historic restaurant (there are several).
Explore evidence of the Revolutionary War, at George Washington’s Headquarters and Jockey Hollow, the site of a large Revolutionary War military encampment. Search for more Revolutionary War plaques and sites around Morristown.
Experience life like it was over 100 years ago at the Fosterfields Living Historical Farm, with farm animals, vintage cars, a picnic area and more.
Discover the birthplace of the telegraph and learn about Samuel Morse at Historic Speedwell.
Just outside Morristown, in Basking Ridge, is the Raptor Trust, a bird zoo and hospital in the forest. This was one of my kids’ favorite destinations.
Just past the Raptor Trust is the Great Swamp Wildlife Refuge, with trails (some with bird blinds that make for excellent bird watching), and an Education Center. Some trails near the Helen C. Fenske Visitor Center were created for kids.
